When we leave Yachats to head to Portland, which route should we take. Drive to Newport or Lincoln City and then to Portland? From Yachats up the coast will we be missing alot if we cut over from Newport. Thank you.
Yachats to Portland, which way?
Though I%26#39;m certain other%26#39;s will disagree, I wouldn%26#39;t even consider going hwy 18 for two reasons. First, you have to deal with all the traffic getting through Lincoln City to even access hwy 18, and second, hwy 18, Otis to Valley Jct has one of the highest accident rates in the state.
Take hwy 20 out of Newport to Corvallis or double back to Florence and take hwy 126 to Eugene. The latter will give you a second opportunity to take in the scenery between Yachats and Florence!!!!

I can%26#39;t even count the nights we have spent in or around Newport, but i do know my wifealways insists we drive up the coast, regardless of the traffic in Lincoln City. we even drove up the coast from Toledo. It is a nice drive from newport to Depoe Bay. you can see ocean most of the drive.
However when I went from Toledo I took route 223 through Dallas then to Salem.
In the summer, any way you go will have traffic. Lincoln City traffic is bad, but Hwy 18/22 is a *much* better road than Hwy 20 inland from Newport.
Hwy 20 includes 13 miles of narrow road with no shoulder, and a LOT of truck traffic on it. There is also ongoing construction congestion.
If you don%26#39;t mind missing a little bit of the coast, you could take Hwy 34 east from Waldport. It%26#39;s a slightly slower road and narrow in spots, but with almost no traffic, and it%26#39;s more scenic. It joins Hwy 20 just west of a small town called Philomath.
Hwy 34 is a GOOD option if you%26#39;re not in a hurry! Very scenic, but VERY slow goin from the summit east about 7 or 8 miles (VERY curvy), even more so than hwy 20. I take this route 5-6 times per year for a change of pace and love it, though I don%26#39;t usually recommend it on TA.
We drive Hwy 34 an average of 3 times every month, from the coast to the valley, (or vice versa), and have done so for 20 years. Some parts are narrow and winding, but since it has essentially no traffic, it is easy to drive in a car.
Between the towns of Alsea and Waldport, a 40 mile stretch of highway, we often meet less than 25 oncoming cars ;-)
I thought about mentioning hwy 34, but chose not to about same reasons as Den. That is way I would go from Yachats. It is a nice though slow drive. prettier than 20. I have never tyimed it. still may be faster to go through Newport. if construction not a major s;ow down om 20.

Thank you very much for the great information. I am going to have my husband take a look at it and see which will be the best way to go. Thanks.
