Camping at Washburne and Humbug Mountain State Parks...

In planning our upcoming coast trip, I see that the campgrounds for both Washburne and Humbug Mountain State Parks are first-come, first-serve. We%26#39;ve never camped at either one before.

How difficult is it to find an available site at these parks in late June? We would probably stay at Washburne somewhere around the 23rd, 24th, or 25th (during the week) and at Humbug Mountain either on the 27th or 28th (weekend).

And if they are full, what are some other campgrounds in those areas that you%26#39;d recommend staying at? Forest Service campgrounds, BLM ones, etc. are fine with us. Thanks!

I assume you are tent camping????

Carl G. Washburne is not generally too busy during the week in June. The best advice for both parks is to get there mid-day to try and find a site. Humbug MAY be a bit more difficult but only b/c you are proposing arriving on a Saturday. If you do end up delaying your arrival until Sunday, you will most certainly be able to get a campsite.

If Humbug Mt is full when you arrive, ask staff to suggest an alternative. Cape Blanco, north of Port Orford is a nice campground and a little larger than Humbug Mt.

Not sure I%26#39;ve ever seen Humbug completely full.

Few of the State Park campgrounds south of Coos Bay fill up in June, the exception is Bullards Beach which has VERY high occupancy year-round. Once July and August roll around, with few exceptions, every State Park on the coast is full on weekends.

Thanks! Yes, we will be tent camping. How early can we arrive at the campgrounds to find a site? I know typically check-in is around 4:00, but can we arrive earlier?

Also, do the state park campgrounds allow more than one tent in a campsite?

And another question: If you have a reserved site, can you change sites when you are at the campground if there is a different site that is available?

Yes, based on availability, you can change sites at check-in or anytime after.

Oops, missed your first questions :~(

I suggest arriving around 1 pm if possible as this is checkout time for both reservation and first-come, first-served campgounds. You MAY have to wait a bit, but generally not too long. This will give you a better opportunity to get a choice site.

The number of tents is NOT the issue. Size of the campsite and number of people are. As long as the site will accomodate your number of tents and there are 8 or fewer people in your party, there should be no problem.
