Chowhounding for 6/17-19...

I%26#39;m going to be at a conference at the Oregon Convention Center later this week, and will be staying downtown near Pioneer Courthouse Square. Any favorite NON-CHAIN food carts or quick lunch places that are recommended? Cheap but fun dinner haunts?

I%26#39;m not against hopping onto MAX or a bus for a quick trip to pick something up... as long as it%26#39;s in the Fareless Square.

Places on the ';must see'; list: Whiffies, Pix (French macarons), Voodoo

Places on the ';maybe'; list: Savor, La Petite Provence (breakfast), Pok Pok (if we can talk a vendor into taking us to din din)

Bump...

Anyone? Bueller?!

I opened this thread yesterday, thinking I might be able to help. Then I read ';Whiffies...Savor, La Petite Provence';, and realized I should be asking you for recommendations, fiveforefun. ;-) Not sure about the ';fun'; part, but for something different, you might check out Ned Ludd or Tanuki. Tanuki is actually a Japanese style bar, but has great food for cheap. More upscale (but, because it%26#39;s tapas, still possibly cheap), Toro Bravo. And, have you been to Navarre? Oregonian just named it restaurant of the year. Nice little place with good food.... ultra casual... and cheap.

Since we%26#39;re headed your direction this weekend (well... Black Butte)..... Is there anything new in Sisters (foodwise)?

This should keep you busy. . .

LOL Misteltoe... I think you mean you should ask my fellow foodies. Those are all places that have been suggested so far either by friends or by people on Twitter (!!). I%26#39;ve only been to Voodoo!

Thanks for the recs! I%26#39;ll add Ned Ludd, Tanuki, Toro Bravo, and especially Navarre to the list. In the meantime I%26#39;ve also been told to try the Waffle Window aand... even though it%26#39;s a chain we%26#39;re planning a stop at Burgerville (Balsamic Strawberry %26amp; Goat Cheese Panino sounds drool-worthy).

Jasone... now that%26#39;s a *list*!! If you had to pick two which would you recommend? ;-)

Now... where to buy some bigger pants for the trip home?

PS Misteltoe I don%26#39;t make it to Sisters too often. Frankly we always used to stop at the little store and gas station on the east side of town, run in and grab an order of biscuits and gravy while they filled the car. But that place is gone now so we go to Rays instead! The Sno Cap is still there and that%26#39;s the only other place we stop with any regularity. The chicken strips are to die for and have ruined me for McNuggets etc for the rest of my life, LOL.

As for secondhand info... I can tell you that my friend went to Jen%26#39;s Garden and loved it BUT it%26#39;s a fixed menu so you get what you get. Scoot%26#39;s is new and we will be going soon because another friend%26#39;s band has a gig there... but it won%26#39;t be for a few weeks. The Sisters Movie House is cool. Nearby is the new-ish relocated (from Redmond) restaurant ';Chloe'; which is also getting great buzz. I think Oregone (or you?) tried the Three Creeks Brewing Pub so that%26#39;s another possibility. Sorry I can%26#39;t give you rec%26#39;s from my personal experience. I%26#39;ll have to work on that. TA needs a DE for Sisters! See ya on the Santiam Pass?

If you get done early enough to hit happy hour, I recommend heading up Burnside and going to Noble Rot at 1111 E Burnside. Great views from the outside deck, fantastic happy hour food from 5-6 and a well thought out wine selection.

Doug Fir is nearby and also has a happy hour.

As for food carts, I love Ziba%26#39;s Pita! They taste just like the ones I had when I was in Croatia and Bosnia Hercegovina. Follow this link for info on Ziba%26#39;s and more carts:

Wild Abandon on Belmont is another one of my favorites for happy hour and they are also offering a recession buster menu right now. They have a great patio for outside dining, too.
