areas to walk and explore
Well, what area will you be staying in, so we will know which ones should be driven to ? :)
I used to just love wandering the NW part of Portland.. from Burnside and 10th, Powells books through the Pearl District, up into the NW neighborhood to the West Hills. The architecture in each area changes, the shops and streets change character and it is just great .. I loved walking on Couch street from the Pearl, over the 405 bridge to Couch Park and then to NW21st and 23rd .. then on into the hills..
You can go to the Rose Test Gardens from here and the Japanese Gardens ..
Or go from 10th and Couch to the Pearl Bakery on 9th, get coffee and a pastry and go through the North Park Blocks, into Chinatown, see the Chinese Gardens..
And down to the River.. but that would be best gotten to from the SW area of town..
I loved Laurelwood Park and walking around the neighborhood there and on Alberta Street on the Eastside of town.
Sellwood is good and there are a lot of antique shops in that area ..
Hope this helps ..

Let%26#39;s not forget the central downtown area, especially Pioneer Square. Local color galore...and always something happening.
The area you are staying in has some nice spots. It%26#39;s an easy walk over to NE Broadway and down through some of the shops.
A little longer is a walk across NE 33rd to Laurelhurst Park. It is beautiful.
I would skip a car going downtown and to The Pearl. Parking is a pain and costs money. Public transport is the best bet.
Heading down to wine country or out to The Gorge, the car is a great idea.
Have fun and let us know if we can help more.
