I have a family reunion in Ashland in August. My husband and I plan to fly into Portland and rent a car and take an extra day to drive along the coast. From reading other posts, I am thinking we should take I5 to Albany, then head for the coast, staying somewhere that night. Then head south down the coast. Should we take Hwy 42 from Coos Bay to Ashland or go to Brookings and up to Grants Pass?
We are healthy seniors, but probably enjoy the view from the car as much as hikes or side trips. We are not into big towns and shopping. We plan to go to Crater Lake while staying in Ashland - and of course take in the Shakespeare festival there.
Thanks for the advice.

From Portland to Ashland
If you have the time, stay on Hwy 101 all the way to Crescent City, then take Hwy 199 to Grants Pass. (There are no roads inland from Brookings.) The south coast scenery is the best of the whole coat, in my opinion! Plus you%26#39;ll see a few miles of redwoods along hwy 199.
From Portland, I%26#39;d suggest you take I-5 to Salem, then Hwys 22/18 to the coast. It%26#39;s a better road than Hwy 20. Both will have traffic, but Hwy 22/18 is wider with fewer large trucks.

Er, make that whole ';coast'; ;-)
Thanks for that advice, half-Brit. Hubby is now agreeing to one extra day for this trip so we can spend more time on the coast. Polly
