Golf trip to Oregon for Sept 2009 and have a few ???'s

I posted some questions a few months. And now that everything is booked, I want to go over our itinerary. I鈥檓 kind of a planner (as you can see below), so it鈥檚 never too early to ask questions. There are 4 of us in our late 30鈥檚 %26amp; early 40鈥檚 will be traveling from Chicago for a golf trip from Sept. 9th to the 13th. I was going to post this on the Bandon forum because this is a trip planned around Bandon Dunes, but it doesn鈥檛 get a lot of activity. I got some great advice from mtngirl and mistletoe, so I decided to put it on the Portland forum. Hope it doesn鈥檛 put me in Tripadvisor jail!!!

Anyway we arrive into Portland at 10:15am on 9/9 barring any delays and have planned a round at Pumpkin Ridge between 2 and 3pm.

Q1: How far is it from airport to Pumpkin Ridge?

Q2: Is there must stop place for lunch on our way

to the golf course or should we just eat there?

After golf, we have a room reserved at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront. $59 a night thanks to SIL. Probably just get a bite to eat close to the hotel because we need to get up early to drive to Bandon.

Q3: Is there a nice brew pub or casual restaurant

near the hotel? Don%26#39;t let the name food you

I enjoy a nice pinot noir as much as I do beer!

Thursday, Sept 10th we have a 12:40 tee time at Pacific Dunes.

Q4: What time do we need to leave Portland to get there on time?

Q5: Good breakfast stop that opens early? Or grab and go? Voodoo Donut???

Q6: Recommendation for a fast, but scenic drive if possible to Bandon?

For dinner that night, due to the long trip and the 110 I鈥檒l post at Pacific Dunes, we鈥檒l probably just relax and have dinner at the Lodge that evening. On Friday, Sept. 11th we have a 7:20am at Bandon Dunes and a 1:50pm at Bandon Trials.

Q6: Any good restaurants/bars in Bandon or nearby we should try? Alloro?

Saturday, Sept. 12th we have our last round at Bandon Crossings at 8am and then grab a bite to eat and drive back to Portland. We will again be staying at the Portland Marriott Downtown. Last night in Portland and want to have a nice dinner and a little fun.

Q7: Dinner recommendations? 2 of the guys are a meat and potatoes kind of people, so nothing to exotic (steaks, Italian??)

Q8: Fun lively bars in the area we should try?

Q9: A nice greasy spoon to soak up some of that alcohol??

Thanks and September can鈥檛 get here fast enough!!

Suggest you leave I-5 at OR-38 for Reedsport then 101 to bandon That is about 240 miles, 140 freeway 100 not freeway.

we just made that trip, but did not track time that well, plus we spent night near Reedsport.

My best guess 2 1/2 hours on I-5. close to 2 1/2 hours on non-freeway. If you leave Portlandduring rush hour, plan a little extra time. for sure i would not take my estimate and then leave at 7AM. If you leave 6 AM you beat rush and should make it. If you are running early stop a view point or two on coast. w

PDX to Pumpkin Ridge is 35 miles +/-, with the city of Portland between them, so there might be any number of ';must stop'; lunch places. But I%26#39;d suggest just heading out to the golf course, where the food%26#39;s decent enough.

For a near the Marriott restaurant, I suggest Veritable Quandry, where I think you%26#39;ll find something to satisfy whatever your 19th hole mood.

I think phirl is pretty close on the drive time to Bandon, and the route he recommends is both the quickest and most scenic. If you step on it, you can make it in 4 - 4.5 hours. With a 12:40 tee time, breakfast will probably have to be in the car.

If you do post that 110, have dinner at McKee%26#39;s Pub at the resort. Nice place to do the post mortem. Best place at the Resort for breakfast, I think, is the small cafe at Pacific Trails clubhouse. Might be inconvenient though, given your early tee times.

Back in Portland.... not sure how nice ';nice'; is. On one end, there%26#39;s El Gaucho; great for the steak and potato guys, but expensive. Might also consider Ringside, an institution in Portland. But, I think you%26#39;d enjoy something like Oba or Paragon just as much. Both have a decent bar scene. For that greasy spoon, Byways Cafe in the Pearl District. Unless you%26#39;re up for a drive to Fat City, several miles southwest of town.

Thanks guys. I%26#39;ll google those spots to see what looks best.

Q1: How far is it from airport to Pumpkin Ridge?

35 miles or so

Q2: Is there must stop place for lunch on our way

to the golf course or should we just eat there?

Cornelius Pass Roadhouse Imbrie Hall Brewpub just off Hwy 26 near Hillsboro - a great ';welcome to Oregon'; sort of place

After golf, we have a room reserved at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront. $59 a night thanks to SIL. Probably just get a bite to eat close to the hotel because we need to get up early to drive to Bandon.

Tons of great places. Higgins, Heathman, South Park, VQ, to name a few.

Thursday, Sept 10th we have a 12:40 tee time at Pacific Dunes.

Q4: What time do we need to leave Portland to get there on time?

It%26#39;s a long drive, leave early

Q5: Good breakfast stop that opens early? Or grab and go? Voodoo Donut???

Grab and go

Q6: Recommendation for a fast, but scenic drive if possible to Bandon?

I-5 as far as possible, it will be quickest. Cut over on 38 is fastest and pretty.

Good choice!

I%26#39;m not sure, should be a couple.

I would head to Gustavs on Sandy - great beer and schnitzel

Q8: Fun lively bars in the area we should try?

Lots. Lotus is close to the hotel,

Q9: A nice greasy spoon to soak up some of that alcohol??

Burgerville - a local fast food chain, but much better than McDonald%26#39;s, etc.

Thanks and September can鈥檛 get here fast enough!!

Have a great time!

';we have a room reserved at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront. $59 a night thanks to SIL';

How did you get a room at the Marriott for $59? what is SIL?

thanks!

Sister in Law (SIL). She works for Marriott.

Hi.

Though it is 35 miles from the airport, roughly, don%26#39;t forget to factor in the baggage claim time and time to get your car....it%26#39;s consistently 60-80 minutes from disembark to our house near P.C.C and that is with carry-on%26#39;s only and not having rental car pick-up.

Would highly NOT recommend the Cornelius Pass Road House for first lunch as previously suggested because of the painfully slow service at that venue. If you have the time, its fine, but if you want to tee off around 2-3 I%26#39;d find something else.

That exit would be a good option for picking up something quick as there are several fast-food choices at that shopping center with Fred Meyer including subs, fish, burgers, Mexican or Chinese, but they are of the chain variety.

Not sure how close you want to be to the hotel -it would be a walk (like more than 11 blocks -but blocks are not as big in Portland as in most large cities), but you might check out Henry%26#39;s Tavern, in the pearl. It%26#39;s got quite a few beers on tap (ok so the website says 100 on tap-wonder if anyone actually counts this?). This is the famous henry weinhard who proposed to fill the skidmore fountain with beer-so all could in enjoy!

follow the Reedsport advice -probably the fastest and most scenic route

Q8: Fun lively bars in the area we should try?

since you like to plan, check out willamette week webpage. They usually have a list of bars, music, events and all the latest happenings...
