I just read an article on the Oregonian today about an old hotel in Astoria that had been closed up for years, and it just reopened. The Commodore Astoria is the name of it it. It just reopened earlier this month. I checked out the website and it looks really cool! Sort of a McMenamins meets Astoria is what the pics look like. Rates start at $69/night and top out at $179, so something for most everyone. I love how they saved much of the old stuff and didn%26#39;t go all plush, since that doesn%26#39;t really ';fit'; with the town, IMO. I hope they do well!
New Astoria Hotel
Hi
Their website didn%26#39;t work but the Oregonian did ..

I agree, to put some big shiny posh hotel there would be too much .. I hope they do well too, they can probably use the attention and the visitors.
New Astoria Hotel
I agree. The coast is not the place for posh, fancy, over the top. When most people thing of the coast (no matter which part) they think ';beachy';.
Although, I have to admit that I loved my huge, fancy room in Vina del Mar, Chile, overlooking the Pacific....but I can chalk that up to ';Hey I was in another country!'; LOL!
Sorry, I should have included the website. Here it is, www.commodoreastoria.com. DH and I were just talking about the article. We both said it looks like a great place. I like luxury places too, when they ';fit';, but I think this fits the town so well.
Totally agree about the luxury places.
And also, the type of people who might be looking for luxury and poshness, might not even be in Astoria..
I know I like different style hotels depending on where I am. In Normandy, I loved the place that was chuck full of WWII pics all over the walls. But then in Paris I loved the beautiful hotel. And when we go to Vancouver, we have a nice place reserved. But I love when a hotel fits with the area. Like the Olympic Lodge in Centralia. Same feel as this, from what I can tell.
I bet Rivergallery knows about this with being from the area. Sounds like the rennovation would have been interesting to follow.
I%26#39;ve been watching this place for a bit, and I must say I love it. The website looks like I designed it (especially the little videos), and the rooms look like I renovated them. Maybe a mid-week trip for the fam is in order (only two more punches on my Astoria Coffeehouse card until I get a free stumptown)!
Anyone know if the old oil boiler down in the basement is still operating? I notice they still have the steam radiators in the rooms, so hopefully if the original boiler is kaput they put in something that does the job and makes those radiators more than just decoration.
The only downside to this place is that it wasn%26#39;t done in 2005 when I was wooing my wife. I could totally see sitting on the window sill smoking cigarettes and drinking Ravenswood Merlot in one of the suites at the Commodore. Back when iPods didn%26#39;t have the fancy videos that you kids enjoy today.
Oh grandpa oregone, tell us more about the Old Days when you were wooing grandma .... ;0)
I love those old radiators... we had them in NY and I loved the noise they made on winter mornings that meant the rooms would be warm when I crept out from under the covers... in the apartment in the Pearl ( fancy newfangled loft thing) they had this huge pipe going through the whole building.. when the heat went on, it nearly blew us off the bed ... feh ..
Oh Scarlett, back in 2005 we didn%26#39;t have your fancy twittering and facebooking. We used MySpace, and we liked it. Why, I%26#39;m so old I still remember when AOL existed. We liked our Indie films with Parker Posey, our lattes without hemp milk, and our nostalgic throwbacks strictly mid-1980s.
We had to walk to school, in the snow, 16 blocks, uphill both ways.
And bread was a nickel. A hundred nickels.
I just emailed the Commodore for a reservation request for 6/21. I%26#39;ll let you know how it turns out.
We had to walk to school, in the snow, 16 blocks, uphill both ways.... carrying your brother on your back?
I look forward to the oregone review .. complete with photos or could we be so lucky as to see a youtube??
oregone--I can%26#39;t wait to hear about it! I will be slumming it in Paris when you are in Astoria though;) I noticed the radiators in the pics as well. What kind of room did you request?
