5j's Beach House Review

We stayed at the 5j%26#39;s Beach home in Newport. Great views and one of the only vacation homes that I would go back to. The owners have put so much style into this home it was great even though it rained 2 of the 6 days we were there.

We absolutely loved it. It is a small house, not recommended for a large crowd, but it%26#39;s right near the beach and we discovered another beach past one house.

We loved the whole house. It says BEACH and SHIPS everywhere.

Nestled away from the bustle of the city and noise, but close to town. Recommend a grocery stop at the local Safeway in Newport. Once we got there, we got pretty lazy about going anywhere.

Also, there is an outlet mall for those shoppers out there in Lincoln City.

Recommend going to Mo%26#39;s and getting a bowl of clam chowder. Also, we spotted whales everyday and there were sea lions up on the beach. Lots of surfers one day, only a couple the others.

We hated leaving and just an FYI, we were able to talk down the price a few dollars because we stayed a full week. It was no problem to negotiate a $20.00 discount, and we checked a TON of other places (to both of our exasperation) that were bare bones and alot higher. Much better than a hotel room, and tons of stuff to do!

Nice review! Staying in a cottage/house is very nice. I know a lot of people that travel that enjoy house swapping. It%26#39;s a great way to go! :)

WE enjoyed the 5j%26#39;s Beach house too. We felt that the location of the 5js beach house was great and we were closer to the beach in Newport OR., than another place we checked out. Great house, we did a little whale watching while we were there, too. At the beach house they have a little brochure on the mantle about whale watching. We followed it exactly and struck paydirt! Very cool.

Just spent 4 days at the beach house and I must say it was the most enjoyable time! The house is beautiful and fully equiped. I would reccomend only an awning and patio table for outside dining.

So much to do and not near enough time, we were so tired every night and it was so nice to sleep in a home environment rather than a stale hotel.

I will deffinatly be back

Hmmm, I%26#39;m thinkin%26#39; sumpum%26#39;s not quaht raht here . . .

three first time posters all at once.

half-brit--There is a lot that isn%26#39;t quite right around here lately;) Look for a pm.

We stayed there for Memorial Day weekend with our kids and had an amazing time. You can see the sea from the back porch. There%26#39;s a Mo%26#39;s and a little ice cream/espresso stand half a block away. When you go to the look-out area, take peanuts!! There are big fat squirrels that jump out of the bushes and sniff around you to see if you have nuts for them. It was absolutely adorable! We only saw one sea lion basking on the rocks, but it was rather overcast when we went.

The lofts are really cool, there are two and they overlook the dining room and kitchen. I have 4 boys so their favorite part was the big captains wheel. We took a million pics of them posing around it and on the ladder. It has a private bedroom for the adults to sleep and then the kids slept in the lofts and on the couches.

The walk to the beaches is really short. One beach has a steep trail going down to it and a little waterfall when you get to the bottom, it was pretty nice.

The other beach though, was our favorite! It had a long stairway leading down. Me and my oldest raced up and down it a few times and I was totally sore the next day, lol!

We live in Portland and have a really hectic life, we thought we%26#39;d try this cabin as we%26#39;ve never done one before. Honestly, it was the most I have relaxed in probably years. I felt really safe with the kids out in the yard or playing the board games. I just rested. Everything was provided, dishes, laundry soap, towels, cleaning supplies. We tidied up and got our full deposit back which was really nice.

The customer service was awesome, we will absolutely be return customers to this place!

Interesting that if you go to their website, it says ';Click here to read reviews.'; Guess what, when you click the link, it brings you straight to this thread.

Hmmmm . . . ;-)

Of course, this original post was from over FOUR years ago!

I hadn%26#39;t noticed the dates. There I go, paying attention again.

Looks like they come back every so often to freshen it up though, LOL!

Hi folks

Ive booked a cheap multi stop flight which includes Toronto to New york via Detroit. However there is an hour connection time in the same terminal it lands in detroit. There were many flights at different times of day but all had the 1 hour connection time.

I think you posted this on the Oregon forum in error.

Toronto to NY via detroit flight help

Hi!

Wrong forum, BUT here I am!

I have had many a connecting flight in detroit. You should be fine as long as there is no delay with your other flight. I once had a little over a half hour and yes, I had to book it from terminal C to A, but I made it.

You should be fine. :)

Dueling Piano Bar Downtown?

Is there a fun dueling piano bar downtown?

Dueling Piano Bar Downtown?

I don%26#39;t believe there is any more. There was one years ago but it closed. :-(

Dueling Piano Bar Downtown?

Dang it! Oh well, I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll be able to find a suitable alternative! Thanks! =)

While it is not a dueling piano bar, you might want to check out Wilf%26#39;s http://www.wilfsrestaurant.com/

An old school restaurant that has stood the test of time.

Another old school steak house with an old school music feel (I do not know if they still have a piano bar)

http://www.clydesprimerib.com/

lisa4travel - did you find an alternative? I LOVE dueling piano bars and would LOVE to find something like that in Portland!

No, we didn%26#39;t find one. But there is definitely not a shortage of fun places to go! So for now, I%26#39;ll just frequent the one close to home or in Vegas! =)

Trip to Oregon in July - What to Wear?

My husband(a ';Born-Again-Fisherman'; by religion :-) and I have planned a trip to Oregon to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary.

We%26#39;ll be spending two night at the Overleaf Lodge in Yachats, one night at the Steamboat Inn on the Umpqua River, one night at McMenamin%26#39;s Old St.Francis School, one night in Hood River, and a few nights in Portland.

I%26#39;m puzzled as to what to pack. We have heard that it can really be cool on the coast but hot inland. What about the Bend and Hood river areas? We%26#39;re really trying to pack light due to the extra cost of baggage on airlines these days. This is going to be especially challenging since it seems waders, vest and a collapsible fishing rod seem to be ';neccesities';!

Thanks for any tips.

Trip to Oregon in July - What to Wear?

LOL '; a born again Fisherman '; very funny...

Layers. tees, some warmer things to throw on over lighter things.. luckily Oregon is casual ...

Trip to Oregon in July - What to Wear?

I agree with what scarlett describes, but I%26#39;ll add a windbreaker to top it all off.

You can expect lows along the coast to be in the upper 40%26#39;s to low 50%26#39;s and daytime highs from the low 60%26#39;s to low 70%26#39;s. Two miles inland it could be 15 degrees (or more) warmer!!! That%26#39;s why we recommend layers! If it happens to be really warm inland, the coast will get pretty windy and since it%26#39;s coming off of the 50+/- degree pacific ocean, it can be rather chilly!.

We visited in July last year, and the weather was fantastic! Definitely plan on layers. The coast was quite cool, but we loved the climate of Bend. High of 80 degrees and NO humidity! This was a welcome change from here in the northeast. I was able to wear capris most of the time in Bend, but pants are definitely needed for te coast. Portland will also be warmer.

Thanks everyone! I will add my Gore-Tex windbreaker and a pair or two of slacks to the mix.

Fleece - make it your friend. Lightweight, breathable, good in all kinds of weather, except driving rain. Then throw the windbreaker over it.

So where is he going to fish?

He might take a charter from Newport or Depoe Bay to fish the Pacific, he might try his hand at Steelhead fishing in the North Umpqua River, and he might drop a line in one of the lakes or rivers in the Sisters area. It just depends on what appeals to him at the time.

Sea Bass and Ling Cod were hitting hard out of Newport last week!!! We limited out on the Sea Bass in about 40 minutes and they were all good sized (and I sould add, EXTREMELY tasty).

That%26#39;s great den !

Tweedledum will have a good time fishing !! :0) but Tweedledee, what do you do while he is fishing?

shopping? spa? fishing too?

Tweedledum - I love it.

Shopping, enjoying the beach, chilling in the mountains, watching the windsurfers - never fear, I can always find something to do.

Southurn Boys comin to play golf

I am trying to get a trip of some guys to go play golf at Bandon Dunes, but I got some questions...

1) Is it fun golf for golfers of all handicaps?

2) How many days is optimal?

3) Are there other courses that are worth playing that may be less expensive?

4) Is there any cheap (I know I am pushing my luck) ways to get on courses out there?

5) What is the best time to come out there for good course conditions %26amp; weather? We were going to try May or early June.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Southurn Boys comin to play golf

I%26#39;m not a golfer, so answers to quetions related to it are out for me, but as for the best time of year to come, May and June can be a real crap shoot. Last year, the weekend b4 Memorial Day, we had three days of temps at or near 100潞. While highly unusual, it does happen. The norm would be light rain or heavy fog with stout north winds and highs near 60潞.

Year in and year out, the absolute BEST weather along the entire Oregon Coast is from August through mid-September, at least, and sometimes, like this year, into mid- October.

Southurn Boys comin to play golf

Im not a golfer either, but can echo den%26#39;s advice about weather.

Not sure what you mean on question 4- are you talking about getting to Bandon Dunes as far as transportation to Bandon Dunes from the airport/NC or coupons/promotions to play at BD, etc?

As far question 2-as how many days playing the courses or your whole trip. Do you want to do anything else beside play golf? Bandon Dunes is pretty isolated you can fly into North Bend airport, but it is pretty limited service and probably pricey(there is only one carrier so they jack the prices up). Otherwise you have to drive from Portland or Eugene airports, which will take at least 1/2 day(portland, 5 hours, Eugene-3 hours).

Thanks for your help. I was just wondering if there was a cheaper way to play the courses other than staying on-site or if that was the best way to go. I was not sure if someone had done some sort of golf package that they would reccommend. We can probably do later in the year as well. Just trying to gather some information, since I have never been to the Northwest.

Of the three courses at the Resort, Bandon Dunes is the easiest, and enjoyable for all handicaps. Pacific Dunes is probably the favorite; some incredible holes with unbelievable views. It%26#39;s more penal than Bandon, but still ';fun'; for the high handicappers (18-24 +/-). Bandon Trails is the longest and least scenic, but playable for golfers at almost any level. If you have the budget for all three courses, you wouldn%26#39;t regret playing %26#39;em. But if you can only swing two rounds, play Bandon and Pacific.

I agree witht others; budget concerns aside, August %26amp; September are the best months to come. But, greens fees vary with time of year, with the lowest November - February. You%26#39;ll run a high risk of rotten weather at that time of year, but I remember one early November round when a caddy said it was the nicest day he%26#39;d seen on the course the entire year. Check with the Resort for any special package deals. I know they%26#39;ve had some in the past.

Yeah, it%26#39;s expensive, but you%26#39;ll really have a better experience if you stay on site. I think it%26#39;s the only way you can get tee times more than two weeks out, too. And I wouldn%26#39;t risk coming out if you didn%26#39;t have tee times; all three courses get heavy play all year round. Course conditions really don%26#39;t vary much; it%26#39;s more the elements - rain, wind, and cold - that determine playability.

A less expensive nearby option is Bandon Crossings. I%26#39;ve not played it, but my brother says it%26#39;s a nice track. He knows what he%26#39;s talking about (plays to a 4).

I live up the coast a couple of hours, and have yet to play Bandon courses.

But check Allegiant Air flights into Eugene or Medford. May be your best bets.

I play alot at Sandpines in Florence, which probably most similar to Bandon. So, you can usually depend on a strong wind in the afternoon; schedule morning rounds.

You can Google for tee times, but have seen very little for the Bandon courses.

Have a great time!

  • Bandon Dunes in Sept or Oct?

Part of a foursome coming over to Bandon and have pretty much decided it will be in the fall. We plan on flying into Portland in the morning and then try to sneek an afternoon round at Pumkin Ridge. Then wake up early the next morning and drive to Bandon. I know it%26#39;s a long drive from Portland, but that%26#39;s what we%26#39;ve decided to do. Thinking about playing 4 rounds in 3 days (18 the 1st day, 36 the 2nd and 18 the 3rd). Is that too much? Or should we try for one more? Any tips on where to stay or places to eat whould be greatly appreciated. I%26#39;m sure I forgot to mention something, so I%26#39;ll check back in soon. Thanks!

Bandon Dunes in Sept or Oct?

I think that if you hope to get tee times more than two weeks out at Bandon, you%26#39;ll have to stay on site. You%26#39;d want to anyway; it helps to make the experience. There are several options for meals; most popular are the lounge in the lodge overlooking Bandon Dunes%26#39;s 18th green, and the pub in the building next door. Our favorite breakfast spot is the little cafe in the Bandon Trails clubhouse.

Is the 18 at Pumpkin Ridge one of the four rounds? Or, are you playing four at Bandon? I know many who%26#39;ve played two rounds in one day there, so it%26#39;s definitely doable. But, instead of playing one of the courses twice (if you%26#39;re playing four rounds at Bandon), consider a round at Bandon Crossings, which doesn%26#39;t have the steep greens fees of the Bandon Dunes Resort courses. Nice track, according to my brother.

Plan on 4.5 hours for the drive from Portland to Bandon. Quickest route is down I-5 to exit 162, which takes you to the coast on hwy 138. A section of that road parallels the Umpqua River; beautiful scenery....

Bandon Dunes in Sept or Oct?

Thanks for the quick reply Mistletoe. Looking to play five rounds in 4 days. One at Pumpkin Ridge, and then the other 4 at Bandon. If we do 18, 36 %26amp; 18 at Bandon, what order would you advise to play the courses? Is Bandon Crossing affiliated with Bandon Dunes? We will most likely stay at the resort, so how far of a drive is it to Bandon Crossing? Thanks.

I don%26#39;t think 4.5 hours from Portland to Bandon is realistic. That would mean averaging 50mph. An early start might run into rush hour traffic getting out of Portland (and hope there%26#39;s no accident in the Wilsonville bottleneck, construction in the Salem area or any other delays getting through Eugene/Sprinfield). And the North Bend/Coos Bay area will also require slower speeds. I think 6 hours would be a safer estimate. If all goes well and it takes less time, that%26#39;s a happier situation than being aggravated because the drive was taking so long.

And I didn%26#39;t allow time for a lunch break and rest area stops.

No disrespect meant oregonpoppa, but my brother lives up here and does most of his work at Bandon, so makes this drive a few times a week. He lives in the gorge and can make it in 4.5 hours most of the time, but allows 5. I think that possible because of the stretches where the speed limit is higher.

heh, heh...have you asked your brother HOW fast he flies in those sections of the trip? Not sure we want to recommend such speeds on TA. And no disrespect interpreted. keggero now has a range of times to play with. Hope keggero doesn%26#39;t drive too fast with a keg onboard!

Re the drive time, I thought 4.5 hours, knowing it usually takes us about 4 from my home in the SW Portland %26#39;burbs.

Bandon Dunes is I think the easiest of the three courses, keggero, so it might be best for your first round. Play Pacific Dunes on the morning of the 36 hole day, then Bandon Trails that afternoon. If you stick with the plan to play all four rounds at Bandon Dunes Resort, I%26#39;m guessing you%26#39;d want to play Pacific a second time.

No, Bandon Crossings isn%26#39;t affiliated with Bandon Dunes. It%26#39;s located about 5 miles south of town, whereas Bandon Dunes is about 5 miles north. Only been open for a few years, but gotten a fair amount of attention: http://www.bandoncrossings.com/homepage .

oregonpoppa--Actually, he drives the speed limit. But he does avoid rush hours. Now we won%26#39;t mention how fast SIL drives, or with how many cell phones in her hands. Course I don%26#39;t want to be anywhere near where she is driving...ever:) You%26#39;ve probably seen her as she has family in your area. Want me to send a car description so you can avoid? :)

    %26gt;%26gt;Want me to send a car description so you can avoid? :)%26lt;%26lt;

LOL, Mtngrl, many years ago . . . my Grandma had always been a poor driver, and got worse as she aged. So, just after she had received her license renewal through about age 90(!), my Dad gave her a present -- a new paint job for her car. She was pleased, that is until she saw it.

Knowing she was going to keep driving, my Dad had the car painted *bright* bright orange! He figured at least all the drivers would have a fair chance of seeing her and getting out of her way, lol.

Skip the car description. If Darwin was right, future generations will have adapted and their ears will just grow their own cell phones. Most of the cars coming down our hill (meaning they probably just left home) already have drivers talking on their cell phones. And, of course, returning home, they have to announce their location and arrival time, don%26#39;t they?

If she%26#39;s enroute to Bandon, she%26#39;ll probably just fly through Eugene on I-5, not poke around in town, where our locals ignore traffic signs and lights and think bicyclists are targets. Besides, our potholes would certainly slow her down.

I still think that, with a stop for lunch, we%26#39;re talking 6 hours...but, then, I%26#39;m stubborn.

Where to stay in downtown Portland?

A girlfriend and I have one day in Portland after a course to do some shopping, eating and sightseeing. We would love to be in an area within walking distance of great unique boutiques and great eats. Can someone suggest a neighbourhood to stay in? I%26#39;ve looked on www.discoverportland shopping and so far am intrigued by the shops on: NW 23rd Nob Hill %26amp; NE Alberta...

We have to book our hotel soon and ANY advice is appreciated (restaurant suggestions welcome too!) as we both have never been to Portland.
